MTD Trade Books was created to help UK builders and trades prepare for Making Tax Digital in the simplest and most cost-effective way possible.
Many sole traders have traditionally managed their records once a year. Under MTD, digital record keeping and quarterly submissions become mandatory for those over the income threshold.
Our focus is straightforward compliance — clear systems, affordable fixed fees, and practical guidance designed specifically for trades.

Save £20 -£30 Per Month On Software
FreeAgent is HMRC-approved bookkeeping software designed for small businesses and sole traders. It allows you to keep digital records, track income and expenses, and submit your Making Tax Digital updates directly to HMRC.
FreeAgent normally costs around £20–£30 per month when purchased directly.
However, certain UK business bank accounts — such as Mettle or NatWest — often include FreeAgent at no additional cost.
That’s an immediate saving of £20–£30 per month.

Why A Separate Business Bank Account Keeps Costs Down
Most sole traders are not legally required to open a separate business bank account.
However, under Making Tax Digital, keeping business and personal spending separate makes compliance much simpler.
When accounts are mixed:
• Transactions must be reviewed individually
• Additional clarification is required
• Bookkeeping takes longer
• Bookkeeping fees can increase
With a clean business account:
• Records stay organised
• Admin time is reduced
• Submissions are smoother
• Overall costs stay lower
Cleaner setup = cheaper service.
Does Making Tax Digital Apply To You?
Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax will apply to self-employed sole traders once their total annual business income exceeds the government threshold.
If your income is above the levels below, you will be required to:
• Keep digital records
• Use HMRC-approved software
• Submit quarterly updates
• Complete an annual final declaration
£50,000 – From April 2026
£30,000 – From April 2027
£20,000 – From April 2028
(Income refers to total turnover, not profit.)
If you are currently completing a Self Assessment tax return once a year, this will change once you fall within the MTD threshold.
In the early stages, HMRC is expected to take a lighter approach while businesses adjust. However, quarterly submission deadlines will become part of the compliance process.
Getting your system set up correctly now avoids pressure later.
